Cockwood to Sidmouth

Day 4 Tuesday 03/09/2013

Cockwood to Sidmouth

Miles walked – 12
Cockwood B&B

Today was overcast in the morning, then it cleared up late morning to become warm and sunny. We were up in good time for a good breakfast (very nice fresh fruit). We left the B&B soon after 9 for the short walk to the ferry at Starcross, to catch the first ferry of the day at 10.10 across to Exmouth.

Starcross Ferry

There were quite a few on the ferry, a small passenger ferry that took a meandering course across the river to avoid boats, sandbanks etc. At Exmouth we had an ice-cream, and finally set off walking about 11.30. There was a long walk along the front at Exmouth, before climbing up and over a headland, then dropping down to BudleighSalterton. We bought lunch from the Co-op there and sat on a bench on the front in the sun eating it, before setting off again.

At the end of the front, we had a long detour inland, following a river through a nature reserve, before crossing the river at a bridge and heading back to the coast. We then climbed up onto cliffs for an undulating walk, with two steep climbs after which there was a long drop down into Sidmouth. Our B&B was in the back streets, and we arrived there about 6.30.

The B&B was quite basic, in the house of an elderly lady, with a shared bathroom and a small bedroom, with spiders in. After a quick shower we headed out for a wander round Sidmouth and found a good pub near the front where I had fish pie for tea, and a few beers before heading down to the front. Unfortunately, we forgot to pay and had to go back!

Accommodation – Larkstone House

Pub – TheAnchor

Beer – The Anchor Inn Beer
