Day 3 Monday 02/09/2013
Babbacombe to Cockwood
Miles walked – 14
Today was
another warm and sunny day, so in shorts and T-shirts again.
After an
average breakfast, we set off from the B&B about 10. We had a wander along
the front at Babbacombe to take some pictures, then set off on the walk. After
a short stretch through residential streets, we soon picked up the proper
coastal path, with lots of fairly gentle ups and downs through old woods,
before dropping down to the bay at Maiden
. The café was shut so we sat on a bench and had some chocolate before climbing back out of the bay and carrying on. From there the route became a lot harder, as the path went steeply up and down through woods and across fields, following the coast. We kept going steeply down, only to do a few metres along and then head steeply straight back up again. We eventually arrived at Sheldon about 2, feeling tired. We found a very nice pub there looking over the water, the Ferry Bridge, so we sat outside therefore quite a while and had a few beers and a crab sandwich.
We then caught the small foot passenger ferry across the river to Teignmouth, and there were then a few more ups and downs before arriving at Dawlish. However from there we finally had an easy, flat walk, underneath the railway next to the sea as the tide was just on its way out (this path is impossible at high tide). From there our route headed inland, following the river. However, by then we were very tired and it was 7 by the time we reached Cockwood. We asked directions and soon found our B&B. After lengthy instructions from the owner, we finally managed to get a quick shower and head to the local pub (recommended to us by an angler we met as we got here). There I had excellent mussels, and beer, before heading back to the B&B.
