Bank holiday weekend took us the lakes to Gill Head Farm Campsite just off the A66
Road. Just before you get to the path that leads up
to Blancathra. Due to the
weather our first walk we kept fairly low. Our aim was to walk to
Mungrisdale to the pub there for lunch. Our route took us over fields to
Far Howe farm, to where the path took a different
route than the map through the yard. This took us to Near Howe Farm and a path that lead us back on route. But the next
field was
very water logged and rutted, which we
did get though in the end. Slowly we got to the pub to enjoy a beer
before heading back out to follow the path along the River
Glendermavkin. This followed the
valley up on a
good path to meet the path that would lead up
to Blancathra. We were surprised how high
we got as it did not feel we were climbing. We then headed back down
to the main road and cross over to follow the path though more feilds
back to the campsite. All in all about 10 miles.
No Wainwrights but near some.
Sunday
took us a short drive down the road to climb Clough Head and onto
Great Dodd. We parked in a
small layby near wanthwaite bridge. The hill was clear of cloud as we
went up. We took a path that went though the old quary and up onto
wantwaite bank and and short detour to Threlkeld Knotts. Then it was a
quick steep path climb upto clough head where
we had lunch. Soon the weather closed in and we then change the route
and headed back down to the oldcoach road track. We did not fancy the
climb to great Dodd in the lashing rain. The track took us back down to
that start. Walk was about 5 miles in all and
one wainwright. Fortunately
it cleared up as we got to the bottom, and after a quick dash to
Keswick to get there before the supermarket shut, we enjoyed a BBQ in
the evening.
