Leaving Keld |
Day 3 Wednesday 26 October Keld to Hawes 13 miles (view day)
This was the best day weather wise, with sunshine and some excellent views. After helping ourselves to cereal and toast provided at the bunkhouse, we set off. From Keld we were soon climbing, to reach the small summit of Kisdon. Our progress was somewhat delayed by an influx of text messages from Colin, as there has been no signal at Keld. From there we had excellent views as we descended towards Thwaite, and we could see Great Shunner Fell in the distance. From this point we spent a large part of the day following the Pennine Way, so route finding was easy.

Thwaite |
From Thwaite we had a long gradual climb up, along a clear easy path passing over moorland, paved in places to avoid the bogs. We stopped for a late lunch on the top of Great Shunner Fell, where we gad good views in all directions.

However despite the stone shelter at the top, the wind soon cooled us down, so after taking some photos, we set off downwards towards Hawes. A diversion from the Pennine Way just outside Hawes brought us round through Appersett and to the hostel at Hawes where we were staying the night.

Heading Down From Great Shunner Fell |
Hawes YHA seemed very quiet after Grinton YHA, they were closing down for the season the next weekend. So we went to a nearby pub for something to eat and a few beers.
