Skiddaw House Hostel

This weekend saw us going up to Skiddaw House Youth Hostel. The plan was to go Friday for two night stay, but with a recent injury a week ago from running, we just went up for one night to join the walking group. Easy slow pace up on the Saturday and easy pace back down on Sunday with no other walk. Main thing was to enjoy the company of everyone up there and to see the hostel.  Overall we were impress with the hostel. Wardens were helpful. Tea made on arrival and biscuits. Good cheap wine and beer. Good range of different bottle beers and good red wines.  Lot better then normal YHA hostels.

Sometime you can be in the right place at the right time.  Going back to December 2012 I lost my job and it always good to tell people about it  Now it 6 months in a job as a photographer going back to what I did many years ago. Four Wainwrights

Another good day for walking in the lakes. Again car was left at the camp site. First Hill was Causey Pike, but before that we had a nice walk in following the Newlands Beck to the base of Rowling end. It look like the path had been washed away when the floods came a few years back. Lot of work have been done to the banks and path.  Plenty of wildlife along this river route.

We then had a stiff climb up onto Rowling hill and then along the ridge to Causey Paike. We then carried onto Sail  before turn east to head down the path to Climb Outerside and Barrow. The path down was poor.

Grisedale Pike and Hopegill Head

Bank Holiday weekend took us to Braithwaite, where we enjoyed few days camping. One of the walks we did was up to Grisedale Pike and onto Hopegill Head.  we took the path from the back of Braithwaite to head up to Steet How. Path was steep first and then it levels out before the last uphill to Grisedale. We had fine view from the top with wall to wall blue sky.

We then carried on the short distance to Hopegill  Head before turning south to Sand Hill.  Then we turned east to take the good path back down to the track which was part of the old mine.

Cribyn and Fan y Big

On the Sunday we headed into the main part of the Brecon Beacons hills for our walk. From Merthyr Tydfil it was a short drive to reach the car park in the forests near the Neuadd reservoir. From the car we walked along the road for a spell heading towards the reservoir, before taking a track to our right, which gradually climbed up giving us excellent views of the peaks ahead.

 Having already climbed Corn Du and Pen y Fan on an earlier trip to the Brecon Beacons, our aim this time was to go up Cribyn first, and then decide after that. The track was easy walking, but was largely covered in snow and some frozen snow, which made it slower going. Having reached the head of the valley on this track, we then turned left to start the steepish climb up to Cribyn.

 There had been plenty of people there before us, and there was an obvious route to follow through the snow. However after the climb, there was a gradual slope back to the actual summit, and here the snow was frozen and slippy, and more care was needed. Views from the summit were excellent, with blue skies and good visibility. There were plenty of other people out, particularly on Pen y Fan.

 We retraced our steps back down to the head of the valley, then climbed steeply up again to reach the summit of Fan y Big. The route up through the snow to this summit was a lot steeper and less obvious, so rather than descending this way, we carried on along the ridge for a way before finding a much more gradual path back down to the head of the valley. From there we retraced our steps back down the track to the road. However by then, what had been frozen snow on the way up had melted a lot and turned into slush. An easy road walk then took us back to the car.
